About Scarborough Choral Society 2011 TBA

The Scarborough Choral Society is a talented community musical theatre company that provides its members with opportunities to get involved in all aspects of the production from acting and singing to set building and production. Their objectives are:

1. To stimulate interest in and promote the performance and appreciation of music;
2. To provide opportunities for Canadian artistic talent; and
3. To establish, maintain, and operate a permanent Canadian musical theatre company.

The Scarborough Choral Society (first called the North Scarborough Choral Society) was founded in 1952 after sensing the need for an organization that produced and performed operettas in the Agincourt area. The group formed a headquarters in Agincourt, where they pooled their resources and increased membership to a point where they were able to perform an annual show. In 1961, the group changed its name to the Scarborough Choral Society, which more accurately portrayed the makeup of the group. From 1961 to 1963, Scarborough Choral Society productions were accompanied by the Metro Orchestra. In 1964, the Society formed an orchestra of semi-professional musicians. In 1965, the group was incorporated into a non-profit, non-shares corporation. In 1997, after 36 successful years of operation the Society became a registered charity.

The Scarborough Choral Society concentrated on Gilbert & Sullivan operettas from 1952 to 1961. In 1962, the Society deviated from G & S, and produced Edward German's Merrie England. This show was such a success that the next year they decided to continue the experiment with Vagabond King. Since then, the Society has gone on to perform many favourites over the years including: The Pirates of Penzance, Die Fledermaus, Merry Widow, Show Boat, The Music Man, Oklahoma!, Anne of Green Gables, Me and My Girl, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Brigadoon.

The Society has also been providing the community with beautiful Christmas music since 1960, where members of the Society caroled in a local shopping plaza. In 1986, the Society performed their first major Christmas concert called Sounds of Christmas at the Markham Theatre. This proved to be so successful that it is now an annual show.
